John Baptist de La Salle
1. founded Teacher Training Colleges to respond to a very basic need in education: the moral and cultural training of teachers. 2. founded the Brothers of the Christian Schools , the first Male Religious Congregation composed entirely of Lay Religious devoted to Christian Education. 3. was responsible for the widespread use of the simultanea-ous method of teaching in primary schools. 4. made children learn to read in French first , rather than Latin, which was traditionally the practice in his days. 5. provided free primary education for working-class children in his schools; a policy not adopted by even progressive governments till much later. 6. was the first to organize Evening and Sunday Schools for young workers.
